Smart thermostat providing energy savings in a modern living room - NeuroWerx home automation for energy savings in Los Angeles and Orange County

Reduce your energy bill with smart home automation

If you’re like most homeowners in Southern California, you’ve probably noticed how quickly those utility bills add up. Between the constant need for A/C in the summer, lights left on in the evening, and all the devices we rely on every day, it can feel like there’s no way to cut back without sacrificing comfort.

But you’d be surprised at how much you can save through automation.

I’ve seen firsthand — in my own home and in the homes of clients how the right mix of smart devices can not only make life easier but also put money back in your pocket. Here are a few smart home technologies you can easily have installed to start saving on your energy costs:

Smart Thermostats: Smarter Heating & Cooling

Heating and cooling account for nearly half of the average household’s energy use. A smart thermostat learns your routines, adjusts temperatures automatically, and even knows when you’re not home. Instead of cooling the house while you’re at work, it dials things back and then brings the temperature back to your comfort zone before you walk in the door.

Smart Lighting and plugs

We’ve all walked into a room hours later and realized the lights were left blazing, or coming home from a long day and noticed you left lights, fans, or TVs on. Smart bulbs and switches solve this problem by letting you control lights and electronic devices with your phone, your voice, or set them on a schedule.

Even better, motion sensors can automatically turn lights off when nobody’s in the room (and turn them on when you walk in!). Clients love the convenience, and the energy savings from turning lights off when not in use can really add up.

One of my favorite tricks is to put fans on smart switches, which can be triggered by motion sensors, automated to turn on and off at certain times, or be voice activated to turn on when you feel like using the fan.

Energy Monitoring: Knowledge Is Power

Some smart plugs and panels let you track exactly how much power different appliances are using. You might be surprised to see how much energy that “always-on” coffee maker or garage fridge actually consumes.

Once you have the data, it’s easy to make smarter decisions — whether that’s replacing an inefficient appliance, putting it on a timer, or just being more mindful about usage.

Small Changes That Add Up

The beauty of home automation is that you don’t need to go all-in at once. Start small — a couple of smart plugs, a smart thermostat, or even motion-activated lighting — and you’ll start to see savings right away. Over time, as you add more devices and connect them together, those savings multiply.

Ultimately you can save on average 10-15% on your energy bills through the use of smart thermostats and even more by automating additional devices like lights and applicances.

The Bottom Line

Smart home technology isn’t just about convenience or having the latest gadgets (although we can all agree that gadgets are totally awesome). It’s about making your home more efficient, more comfortable, more convenient, and more affordable to maintain. With energy costs rising in Southern California, every dollar saved counts.
